Autism and Shamanism

17 03 2012

Theologian turned geologian Thomas Berry postulated that the western humans had become “autistic” in relationship to the natural world as a result of viewing the world as separate from ourselves. I was in awe of the accuracy of this diagnosis and stunned at its profound implications.

If you haven’t thought about autism recently, I looked up numerous and differing definitions. However, a basic definition is that it is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. Anyone who has interacted with an autistic child, and these days that is nearly everyone, realizes that they may act as though others, even loving parents, didn’t matter. The analogy to how we treat the planet is so similar. I immediately visualized a loving mother giving her child everything he needed but he just does not respond. Then I thought of that Mother being the Earth. I could go on, but I’m sure you get my drift.

It goes a long way to explaining why we feel drawn to vestigial tribal people who live close to nature.  This isn’t just sentimental and romantic.  These people have so much to offer us if we can just find a respectful way to learn it.

From the Macrocosm to the Microcosm

This alone would be a worthwhile thought to share but I can’t help but find a parallel between this macrocosm event and the microcosm many families are facing today.

I just looked at the Autism Society webpage and found the following statistics:

  • 1 percent of the population of children in the U.S. ages 3-17 have an autism spectrum disorder.
  • Prevalence is estimated at 1 in 110 births.
  • 1 to 1.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder.
  • Fastest-growing developmental disability; 1,148% growth rate.
  • 10 – 17 % annual growth.

Thinking of this, I remember Frost’s poem, Fire and Ice from my high school English class.

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Autism may have a scientific explanation. Undoubtedly autistic people have much to teach us. They certainly live in this moment.  However, what if so many children are born with autism that society cannot function?  Could that be the ice Frost proposed? Whatever the cause, and benefits, the call for living closer to nature by recognizing our mother, loving our mother, and meeting her needs are imperative. That is probably the greatest gift the resurgence in shamanism has to offer this world.

Help for Families

With so many parents looking for help for their autistic children it seems appropriate to address the question, can shamanic healing help these children?

There seem to me to be three main opinions about the effectiveness of shamanic healing.

  • The first, and most common in this autistic age, is that it is foolish superstition and has no validity.
  • The second is that shamans were the  precursors of modern psychologists and could possibly be of some help with emotional or mentally based issues. Their answer would likely be no, shamanism could not help decrease the unwanted symptoms of autism.
  • The third group, my group, recognize that healing, magic, or spiritual power, does exist. Individuals may define this as a gift from God or as a natural expression of this universe which our ancestors know and used (back when they lived in harmony with nature). It is still available today.

The answer isn’t simple. Any action taken has to respect the individual gifts of the autistic person and even then, in every case, the practitioner can only go to the compassionate spirits and ask for help. Still, there is the possibility of help.

If you are a parent seeking such help, here are some suggestions for finding a practitioner:

  • First, trust your feelings.
  • Only go to a practitioner that you know, feel good about, or who comes highly recommended by someone you trust.
  • Be aware that most practitioners have the desire to help, whether or not they have the ability, experience, and power to do so.
  • The practitioner cannot promise anything but their best effort.

I am aware that organic diet, some vitamin supplementation, and interactivity with nature such as through animals has provided help to some autistic people.  I prescribe time in nature for all of us.   I also send my prayers to those whose lives are so profoundly affected.

Shapeshifting Consciousness – Personal and Global Transformation

8 03 2012

Llyn Roberts & John Perkins are hosting an event  at Mount Madonna Center, March 16-18, 2012 which you may find of interest. I am posting this with their permission at their request. I am no affiliated with this activity but it it sounds worthwhile to me.

For more information or to register:  http://www.mountmadonna.org/live/Rob-3-16.html

We have entered a time prophesied by many cultures for shapeshifting into higher consciousness. Amazonian hunters transform into jaguars for stealth and swiftness; Andean birdpeople shapeshift into balls of fire to incinerate illness; Siberian elders soar like eagles to gain power to lift their communities from cultural oppression. These shamans have taught Llyn Roberts and John Perkins that shapeshifting – the ability to alter form at will – is innate to us all and can be used for positive change.

In this experiential workshop we translate ancient shapeshifting techniques into modern day practices to transform personal imbalances; open to our higher purpose; deepen our relationship with spirit and nature; and reclaim our power to make a positive difference in the world. Invoking shamanic guides and spirits we release limitations, engage in life-changing fire ceremonies, experience powerful expanded realities and shapeshift into forms that encourage positive personal and global change.

LLYN ROBERTS, M.A., is a prominent teacher of healing and shamanism. Her newest book, Shapeshifting into Higher Consciousness, integrates spirituality, shamanism and environmental activism.  For more information see www.dreamchange.org.

JOHN PERKINS is an authority on shamanism and a New York Times best-selling author of many books including Shapeshifting and Confessions of an Economic Hitman. John’s corporate background offers unique perspectives for personal and global shapeshifting.  For more information see www.dreamchange.org.

Three Levels of Self Protection

8 02 2012

“How can I protect myself?” I am frequently asked.

Level 1

The first advice many people receive is to visualize a energy shell around themselves. The color of this energy varies depending on who you listen to.   I call this level 1 self protection. This  easy method reminds us we can chose what to allow into our mind, body and spirit.  The most important part of this plan is holding the intention to be protected.  When we focus on an intention with enough power nothing else is needed.

Level 2

As I continued to see the variety of human suffering I became aware of another way to visualize self-protection.  When confronted by evil entities or energy I wanted help.  I realized that we can connect to great power through many spiritual practices. Connecting to this power we are metaphorically connecting to a 1000 watt light bulb. Any evil that touches it is repelled as though it was a bug touching a bug zapper.

Level 3

Eventually I had trouble using the word evil. I think of events and energies which don’t service us an abuse of power. The power itself isn’t the problem.

I do my healing work in my home. I began to think of my home as a goldfish bowl filled with water. The water being the air in the house. I thought of the water as pure loving kindness.  If anyone brought evil into the house I saw them speak and visualized their words as though breathing red food coloring into that water of loving kindness. The water transformed that breath and the water became clear again. Eventually I visualized the earth and its atmosphere  as this same bowl of loving kindness. Perhaps we pollute the earth’s loving kindness as we pollute its oceans.

And yet, how beautifully simple.  Animism and physics both tell us that all things of this world are constructed of the same particles.  Shouldn’t we view them as filled with the same great mystery which created us? More about animism and evil later.  In the meantime, I hope  you can use something here to protect yourself.

Fees

7 02 2012

For years I have resisted using a set fee schedule. I found that for each person who was not able to afford healing there was a generous person who paid enough to supplement me for those who couldn’t afford to pay. In recent years, this is no longer the case.

Today my guidance is giving me a different prospective. For the first time in 25 years of doing this work I am setting a fee schedule. It is as follows:

First visit                              typically 2 hours                $140

Return visits                       1 hour                                      $70

Additional time                 Each 15 minutes                  $20

If a visit takes less time, the fee will be pro-rated.

This action should allow:

  1. Each client to commit to their own healing.
  2. Each client to plan for the cost without stress.
  3. Me to continue to be able to do the work.

If you would like more information on fee I am reposting an excellent article by my friend Lauren’s, a shamanic practitioner in the Chicago area.

You are invited to a Psycho-pomp Event

30 01 2012

On Saturday night, February 11, there is a public healing session at my home in Capitola. We held a similar event in January and had a great event. For the February event we are adding an opportunity Psycho-pomp work. This term is used to describe work done with those approaching death or whom have died but not yet found peace.  The shamanic techniques used for this work are also appropriate to use with people not in typical states of consciousness because of coma or brain damage, or who are withdrawn, hyperactive, mentally challenged, or autistic.

The decision to work with this topic at this time in a result of a recent death in my family. It has inspired me to make this training available to others who may not be following a shamanic path but whom could use the techniques. If there is sufficient interest, I will offer a training in this work. If you want more information please email me or sign up to attend the Saturday night gathering.  That gathering is planned for 7:00 to 9:00 on Saturday night by reservation. A $10 donation is recommended.

December 2011 Events and First Quarter of 2012 Events

6 12 2011

Dear Friends-

Everyone seems to be learning from the same teacher, the economy. This forced letting go of our identities is sometimes harsh and difficult but also opens the door for learning and growth. As I let go of identities which no longer serve me new visions appear.  Chief among these is the desire, finally, after years of saying no, to step humbly into the role of teacher, mentor, and workshop leader.  I am happy to announce the following activities. Some are designed for those seeking tools for self-healing (Basic) and some are for those seeking growth as healers (Advanced).

(Basic)Self-healing and basics of shamanism

Basic Journeying – this is an introduction to the terminology and cosmology of the shaman’s world. Learn about power animals, spirit teachers, and nature spirits by experiencing them, not by hearing about someone else’s experience. Come prepared to participate. This is a six hour class being offered twice. Since this is a great preparation for the advanced program I am offering it despite the hectic season and will consider offering it at other times if requested to do so.

  • Saturday December 17, 2011.  9:00 through 4:00 with a one hour lunch break. $60

Or

  • Saturday January 7, 2012.   9:00 through 4:00 with a one hour lunch break. $60

Power Dance and Shamanic Healing

Experience a traditional community ritual including the opportunity to receive multiple healing in a shamanistic style.

  • Saturday, January 14, 2012 7:00 p.m. through 9:00 p.m. $10
  • Saturday, February 11, 2012 7:00 p.m. through 9:00 p.m. $10

(Advanced) An apprenticeship/mentoring program

This program requires a one year commitment to the members of this working group. Membership will be closed once the program begins. The three month sessions are simply a way to make the cost more affordable. Please do not begin if you do not intend to stick with it for the year.

This program will be a series of four Three Month Sessions.

The First Three Month Session is scheduled for:

Saturday, January 14, 2012 9:00 a.m. through 9:00 p.m.

Saturday, February 11, 2012 9:00 a.m. through 9:00 p.m.

Residential

Friday March 9, 2012, through Sunday March 11, 2012

  • Friday March 9, 2012, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Sunday March 11, 2012, 9:00 to 12:00 a.m.

One working definition of a shaman is “one who goes into an altered state of consciousness at will to bring back information for the healing of others, the community and/or the planet.” This program includes instruction in typical shamanic activities such as extraction, soul retrieval, de-possession, curse removal, divination, psycho-pomp, space clearing, and working with nature spirits and other compassionate spirits to achieve these results.

Approximately one-half of our time will be spent outdoors and will include visits to local power places. We can’t learn what our shaman teachers have learned through a lifetime of living in harmony with nature on a Saturday afternoon. The weekend sessions will provide a time to be still in nature and go deeper into our lessons. At least as important as learning the techniques of healing is learning about the spiritual wholeness that makes it all possible.

While this is not designed as a program for those seeking healing, there is not a healer alive who does not receive healing through helping others. Be prepared to learn about yourself, your ancestors, your fears, and your strengths. Learn to trust and utilize your abilities and receive affirmations and validation of them.

Since this is Santa Cruz, I add the following. You cannot use mind altering drugs (including marijuana) and participate in this program ergo the words “go to into an altered state at will”. Participation is at my discretion.

Cost of Program:

$400 for each 3 month commitment payable in advance of the first meeting of each quarter.  In some cases there will be additional modest costs for camping or other accommodations for the weekend events.

Schedule for the three remaining quarters will be presented to participants at the first session. The schedule is somewhat flexible at this time but will generally be the second weekend of the months with a weekend event culminating each quarter.

Fees and Costs for Shamanic Work

13 11 2011

The following is an excerpt from a paper by my friend Lauren Torres in Chicago.

Fees and Costs For Shamanic Work – How Much To Charge?

Every shamanic practitioner struggles with setting a price for shamanic work.  The majority of shamanic practitioners have a heart-felt desire to help and would be happy to do it for free. But people often place a value on something based on how much it cost.  It is also important that the practitioner has a sense for his or her own value.  The shaman healer’s time is worth something.  It is also important to note that the person getting healed gets as much out of it as they give.  I have seen a pride on the face of clients when they have paid me, like “I did this for myself” or “I provided for myself.”

In tribal societies the shamanic work might be paid in food, or livestock or other services.  The main thing was that something was given for something received.  Nowadays, the shamanic practitioner must take into account the economic conditions of the area they are living in.  High cost of living areas mean higher prices, but what about the people who can’t afford those costs?  Some practitioners handle this by putting themselves on a donation basis.  But in the case where a healer does have a price, they often are willing to accept another fee or an exchange of services.

Fee Flexibility     The fee is all about an exchange of value.  Just like the parable where the beggar gave his last coin and the rich man’s contribution thought 10 times the amount was not as valuable as the first man’s contribution.  Different amounts of money have different values to different people.  So it’s understandable that you may offer a different amount.

Also some practitioners will accept exchange of services.  Do you know how to make a good flier?  Are you an excellent baker? This hearkens back to the tribal societies where goods where given for shamanic healing.

The important thing is that you offer what you feel it is worth.  Because this really is a situation where what you offer has an effect on the healing.  The giving of the exchange fee or item has an opening effect on you energetically [it demonstrates a strong intention for healing}.  If you are stingy that will close you up.  Freely giving also gives the spirits the message, this person is here, she is committed to this, and they will then work on your behalf in the spirit of your own commitment.

What are you paying for?     There is more work going on than meets the eye.  And in case you’re wondering what that is, I thought I’d try and explain it to you.  Depending on the depth of the healing the shaman healer will have to prepare him or herself.  She or he has to put out a strong call to the spirits to come to aid in the healing.  The healer has to call to the energy of the healing and begin drawing it towards himself.  She may have to go on diagnostic journeys.  Sometimes a lot of preparation has gone into the healing before the healer has the healing session with you.  A good healer knows he must come into the healing session with the right state of mind and may spend some time in meditation or centering before she arrives/you arrive.

If the work is a shamanic extraction it may take a lot of effort on the healer’s part to remove the blocks from you.  The shamanic practitioner has to build themselves up to be a strong enough magnet to pull the misplaced energy out of you.  If the work is a soul retrieval she may need to put a good amount of effort into the search to find your missing pieces.  Some healers will not charge you for additional sessions to complete a healing, so that follow up work may be included.

When a shamanic practitioner has a healing session or teaches a workshop he or she creates an energetic container.  That means a shamanic healer expands her own energetic field (which would normally be a few inches to a foot from their body) until it encompasses the whole room or the entire building in some cases.  That container is then filled with the healing energy he has called and the healing energy of the spirits which he then holds there for the length of the healing and sometimes afterwards for a time.  The shaman provides the a pathway so the helping spirits can stay anchored in the room.   With each additional person being added to a healing ceremony or a workshop it takes that much more effort to hold the healing space and the space needs to be that much bigger and stronger.  The better container the more effort that is involved to build and hold it, but the better the container the much deeper the healing for the one(s) being healed.

Generally soul retrieval and then shamanic extraction will be more then divination, power animal retrieval, or a general healing (like drumming for you.)  Soul retrieval, de-possession, and extraction are more taxing on the healer then divination or power animal retrieval.  House clearing or land clearing will vary with the difficulty of clearing the energy, how stuck and heavy it is.
